The Fourth Sunday of Advent December 21, 2008

The Proclamation
Luke 2:10-14 (HCSB) 10 But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: 11 today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David. 12 This will be the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a feeding trough.” 13 Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: 14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people He favors!

Angels! They are all over the Christmas story! They bring the proclamation to the world of the good news! This is as they say “good news of great joy that will be for all the people: today a Savior…was born…”
This is what Christmas is all about!
With all the hustle and bustle of Christmas we almost forget what it is about.
Let me use some dialog from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” to make the point.

Charlie Brown: I guess you were right, Linus. I shouldn't have picked this
little tree. Everything I do turns into a disaster. I guess I really don't know
what Christmas is all about.[shouting in desperation]

Charlie Brown: Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?

Linus: Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.[moves toward the center of the stage]

Linus:Lights, please.[a spotlight shines on Linus]

Linus:"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, 'Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a
Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.' And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.'"[Linus picks up his blanket and walks back towards Charlie Brown]

Linus:That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.

Thanks, Linus, we all needed that.
