December 3

Week 1: Jesus – Sent to Save Sinners
December 3

Isaiah 59:2 (HCSB) But your iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins have made Him hide [His] face from you so that He does not listen.

Discuss: What creates a barrier between us and God? Why does God not listen?

Sing: “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, our sin keeps us from having a relationship with you. Help us to seek your forgiveness. In Jesus name, Amen.

Jesus -- Eternal with the Father
December 2

Jesus was with God from the very beginning, long before He was born in Bethlehem. Let’s look at something Jesus did before He came into the world in human form…

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation; 16 because by Him everything was created, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through Him and for Him. Colossians 1:15-16

Discuss: What is it that Jesus did? What things did Jesus create?

Sing: “Angels from the Realms of Glory”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You created all things. I know that I can trust you with my life because You rule the universe. Amen.

Jesus -- Eternal with the Father

December 1

Jesus said, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:13)

Discuss: Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, like our A and Z. What did Jesus mean when He said he was the A and Z? When did Jesus’ life begin?

John wrote in his Gospel about Jesus:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning….The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:1-2, 14

Discuss: Who is the Word? What do these verses tell us about Him?

Sing: “O Come, All ye Faithful”

Prayer: Lord, Thank You that although You are God, You came to earth to let us know what God is like. Without Bethlehem, we would never know You. Amen.

Getting Started with Advent

Advent literally means the “coming or arrival, especially of something extremely important.” Each week of the Christmas season we will be providing you with devotions that you can use by yourself or with your family in order to celebrate Advent
The focus of Advent is two-fold. On the one hand, we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Son of God who came into the world as a human child to give us forgiveness for our sins. On the other hand, we can look forward to the end of the world with hope because through faith in Jesus, it will mean the beginning of a new life with Jesus for eternity.
Advent then is a time for us to repent and believe. Knowing that Jesus was born to forgive our sins, we repent (admit our failures to God) and believe that we are forgiven because of Jesus. Also, knowing that Jesus is coming back to Earth to take us to a new heaven and earth, we repent and believe that when Jesus returns, He will give us eternal life.
